What is ERCP?

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialised procedure used to diagnose and treat problems affecting the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. During the procedure, a flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth into the small intestine. Special instruments and X-ray guidance are then used to examine the ducts and perform treatments when necessary. ERCP is primarily a therapeutic procedure, meaning it is often used to treat a problem rather than simply diagnose it.

Indications

When is ERCP recommended?

ERCP may be recommended for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as gallstones blocking the bile duct, jaundice caused by bile duct obstruction, narrowing (strictures) of the bile or pancreatic ducts, bile leaks following surgery, and certain pancreatic disorders. It may also be used for the placement or replacement of bile duct stents, as well as the investigation and treatment of selected pancreatic and biliary conditions.
