What is Endoscopic Ultrasound?

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) combines endoscopy with ultrasound technology to produce highly detailed images of the digestive tract and nearby organs, including the pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, and surrounding lymph nodes. A special endoscope with a miniature ultrasound probe is passed through the mouth or rectum, depending on the area being examined. EUS can also be used to obtain tissue samples using a fine needle for further analysis.

Indications

When is EUS recommended?

Your doctor may recommend EUS for the evaluation of pancreatic cysts or masses, investigation of abnormalities detected on CT or MRI scans, assessment of bile duct disorders, staging of gastrointestinal cancers, or investigation of unexplained abdominal pain. EUS may also be used to obtain samples from suspicious lymph nodes or tumours and to evaluate submucosal lesions that develop beneath the lining of the digestive tract.
